This Summer, The Beautiful Futures Lab (BFL) is coming to the Maria Mitchell Association as a series of month-long journeys of exploration guided by MMA's Scientist-In-Residence, Dr. Rich Blundell. The BFL represents a scientifically informed, spiritually inspired, and culturally creative response to the spectrum of crises threatening the flourishing of life on Earth. Dr. Blundell will introduce how this unprecedented constellation of maladies known as the "metacrisis" – ecological breakdown, economic instability, political polarization, and technological disruption – isn't just a series of problems to solve but an evolutionary invitation to remember our fundamental nature as Earthlings.
In this talk, Dr. Blundell will introduce the BFL as a living laboratory for exploring how these converging challenges are actually guiding us toward a more mature way of thinking, feeling, being, and identifying with the living Earth. Join us in cultivating a scientifically grounded philosophy of belonging that transforms anxiety into agency and offers genuine hope grounded in remembering our inextricable entanglement with the creative life force of nature.

Venture beyond conventional economic thinking with Dr. Rich Blundell as he unveils Oikanomics—a revolutionary paradigm that recouples ecological health to economic prosperity. Drawing from both cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom, this provocative session challenges the extractive principles driving our current systems while offering a practical, nature-aligned alternative.
You'll discover how right-relational dynamics rather than mere transactions can generate abundance, how cultural creatives become valued shareholders in a regenerative economy, and how we can transition from scarcity-based models to patterns of genuine flourishing. As our political, social, energy, and economic systems face unprecedented challenges, Oikanomics presents not just a theoretical framework but an actionable pathway toward a more equitable, sustainable and genuinely prosperous future.
This talk is your opportunity to glimpse beyond the current paradigm and participate in what might be our most important economic evolution.
