Join our astronomers for an impressive tour of Nantucket's night sky! Explore the Moon, planets, stars, nebulae, and even distant galaxies through the Maria Mitchell Association's telescopes.  Along the way, discover the stories behind the constellations, learn why the Moon changes phases, explore our solar system, and uncover the science behind eclipses and other celestial phenomena.

Designed to be engaging and interactive for all ages—with a special focus on K–12 students, young adults, and families, this program takes place at the Maria Mitchell Association's Loines Observatory, located at 59 Milk Street Ext.

This community-centered program invites students, educators, families, and visitors to experience the wonders of astronomy while learning from our knowledgeable staff in one of Nantucket's premier observing locations.

Registration is required. Our stargazing programs take place whenever conditions are safe and are only canceled in cases of inclement weather, such as rain or thunderstorms. Overcast skies alone do not result in cancellation. On cloudy evenings, our astronomers present an engaging program featuring fascinating astronomy topics, current celestial events, the science of the night sky, and opportunities for questions and discussion—ensuring every visit is an inspiring educational experience.

Throughout her life, Maria Mitchell believed in the importance of “learning by doing.” While a professor at Vassar College, this philosophy led to her lasting impact on the women who took her astronomy and mathematics courses, many of whom went on to become astronomers, scientists, and educators themselves.

Today, the MMA continues with this legacy to cultivate a curiosity for the Universe and the natural world. With this spark of curiosity, the MMA hopes to inspire the next generation of scientists and environmental stewards. It is also this philosophy that inspires the name “Look Up,” aiming to open the Universe to curious minds and allow people to see what before was unseen. As Mitchell once said, "We have a hunger of the mind which asks for knowledge of all around us, and the more we gain, the more is our desire; the more we see, the more we are capable of seeing."
