INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK
Happy Earth Day and kick off to Dark Sky Week on Nantucket. At its meeting on March 26, 2025, the Nantucket Select Board officially proclaimed the week of April 21–28, 2025 as International Dark Sky Week on island.
International Dark Sky Week is a global initiative that celebrates the beauty of the night sky and raises awareness about the impact of light pollution. The Select Board’s proclamation further recognizes the importance of preserving Nantucket’s natural night environment — a vital part of the island’s cultural heritage, ecological health, and scientific legacy.
The outdoor lighting bylaw proposed by Nantucket Lights founder Gail Walker (Citizen Warrant Article 76) and adopted at Nantucket’s 2023 Annual Town Meeting in a vote of 298-152. Article 76, as adopted, was approved by the Massachusetts Attorney General on Sept. 8, 2023 and thus became effective Jan. 1, 2024, by its terms.
The Town and our partners encourage all residents and visitors to participate by learning more about light pollution and taking steps to minimize unnecessary outdoor lighting. Together, we can protect our night skies for future generations.
How can we protect the night for all to enjoy?
• Lights at night should have a clear purpose.
• They should be targeted and directed downward, so as to minimize the effect on wildlife.
• Use low levels of soft, warm light.
• Utilize timers or motion detectors.
This week, we will celebrate Dark Sky Week with stargazing at Altar Rock, in the Middle Moors, hosted in partnership by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Nantucket Lights, and the Maria Mitchell Association. This FREE, family-friendly community event offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the night sky while also learning about light pollution and the importance of preserving Nantucket’s natural starlit beauty. Guided by expert stargazers, attendees will discover constellations and celestial wonders in a pristine, low-light environment.

OSPREYS ON NANTUCKET 2/2
The first Osprey pole was in Coskata Marsh in the late 1970’s, hand-carried by U Mass Students. Nantucket Electric assisted with a bucket truck when the first Osprey chick was banded by Edith Andrews on the ram pasture property in 1986.
In 2001, the MMA hired Dr Robert Kennedy as the Director of the Natural Science Department. The new position was made possible by the generous gift from an anonymous donor interested in supporting the efforts of the MMA to provide a year round program of science research and education.
In 2002, MMA Museum Director Dr. Bill Maple, MMA Ornithologist Edith Andrews and Dr. Bob Kennedy initiated the process of upgrading the management of the MMA’s important scientific collections, particularly the bird, insect and plant collections. At that time, Edith Andrews, Dr. Bob Kennedy, and Dr. Peter Boyce initiated a long term population survey of the Ospreys of Nantucket. They monitored and banded and taught interns to monitor and band Ospreys. Their research culminated in a study of their migration with back-back radio transmitters put on two birds, one named “Mr. Hannah” and one named “Senor Bones”, named by local school children. In 2002 there were 10 nesting pairs on the island, of which 7 successfully reared 13 young. Bob Kennedy organized an effort to get Nantucket Electric to put up poles for private landowners. Nantucket Electric and MMA then joined forces to install new poles and to modify existing ones across the island. Nantucket Conservation Foundation, The Linda Loring Nature Foundation, Nantucket Land Bank, The Trustees of Reservations and the University of Massachusetts Boston Nantucket Field Station also offered assistance and access to their properties.

OSPREYS ON NANTUCKET 1/2
As MMA Ornithologist Ginger Andrews put it in a recent issue of Nantucket Today,
“The Osprey comeback story is a familiar one. They were once a common sight along the East Coast, welcomed by farmers who put up nest platforms for these fish-eating raptors. Ospreys’ presence deterred chicken-eating raptors who dined off farmers’ free-ranging flocks.
After World War II, DDT – later recognized as a human carcinogen – was applied at landscape scale along the East Coast for mosquito control. Suddenly, resident Ospreys were unable to lay viable eggs and their numbers plummeted. When the connection was proven and the chemical banned, their numbers increased.
But a new problem arose. Ospreys liked utility poles as nest sites, despite frequently getting killed by collisions with the wires. This knocked out the power of hundreds of customers on a regular basis. So utility companies consulted ornithologists. By understanding the birds’ ecology, companies were able to solve the problem in a cost-effective way. They put up nest poles closer to water, where Ospreys preferred to raise their young. Although Nantucket’s first Osprey platform was put up by bird-lovers, most of the poles where we watch Ospreys today are courtesy of National Grid.”
So, how did that transpire?

WHY SAVE SEALS | SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES
Pam Murphy and Kim Schulam of Marine Mammal Alliance will join us for our winter speaker series, to discuss the importance of seals and other marine mammals in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem — and how we can all help keep these populations safe.
Pam Murphy has been involved in animal rescue for many years, from creating a Be Kind to Animals Club at the age of 7, to one of the founders of Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals (NiSHA) in 2011, serving 8 years as board president. Her extensive board experience with TWN, NiSHA, and NAC put her in a solid position to manage MMAN’s board and see it develop into a stronger organization, capable of attracting the donor support the mission deserves.
Kim Schulam, a Biological Sciences major in college, initially considered the fields of Marine Biology or Veterinary Medicine but ultimately pursued a career as a Physicians Assistant. Now retired from medicine, is Level A trained, regularly attends IFAW’s Marine Mammal Mass Stranding training, and is 24-Hour HAZWOPER certified for oil spill wildlife rescue. Now a full-time resident of Nantucket, she serves as the team’s Stranding Coordinator and Board Vice President. She coordinated MMAN’s first team-conducted large whale necropsy last year and works closely with NOAA to maintain the team’s Stranding Agreement as Nantucket's sole agency legally permitted to handle marine mammals.

SOLAR SYSTEMS AT SMALL FRIENDS
It was a beautiful sunny morning to learn about our solar system and how our planets align at Small Friends on Nantucket! The Maria Mitchell Association led an immersive exercise for students to experientially learn together.
This month, all of the planets (except Pluto) will be in the sky at the same time! Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus are easy to see with the naked eye. Mercury can be seen but is difficult because it is only visible near the horizon at sunset. For Uranus and Neptune, binoculars or a telescope are needed. The planets seem to line up because they all follow the “Ecliptic” which is the Sun’s path through the sky.
PLANETARY PARADE
2025 is starting off strong for skygazers, with a planet parade now visible in the sky. A planet parade is when several of our solar system’s planets are visible in the night sky at the same time. In February, all of the planets (except Pluto) will be in the sky at the same time. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus are easy to see with the naked eye. Mercury can be seen but is difficult because it is only visible near the horizon at sunset. For Uranus and Neptune, binoculars or a telescope are needed. The planets seem to line up because they all follow the Ecliptic which is the Sun’s path through the sky. The peak viewing night will be February 24, 2025 — 40 minutes after sunset looking west.

WELCOME NANTUCKET CUB SCOUTS
Nantucket Pack 92 Cub Scouts generously donated their time and skills to create new homes for the Hinchman House Natural Science Museum’s tortoises, Mzee and Melvin!
Mzee and Melvin grew a lot in 2024, and it was clear that they would soon need a new home… Pack 92 stepped up to the challenge, resizing, lining, and decorating wooden crates to create two new forever homes for our tortoises.
This past week, the Scouts came to the Hinchman House Natural Science Museum to move the tortoises in! It was a busy morning of moving rocks, preparing substrate, constructing cover, and getting a little muddy, and the Scouts were incredibly innovative, hardworking, and excited to help out their tortoise friends.
Mzee and Melvin have been enjoying their new homes, and welcome visitors at the museum to say hello!
Thank you @sandycisco for the photos!

JANUARY SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES
Join us Wednesday, January 22, at 7PM for a very special Science Speaker Series, which you can freely watch from the comfort of your own home.
The MMA proudly welcomes Gail Walker, founder of Nantucket Lights, Dr. Geoff Clayton, Interim Director of Astronomy at the MMA, and Dr. John Barentine, founder of Dark Sky Consulting, in a panel discussion moderated by the MMA’s Executive Director, Joanna Roche.
Learn about the Nantucket Sky Quality Monitoring Project, a joint initiative of Nantucket Lights and the MMA launched in 2022 to collect ground-based measurements to determine how dark Nantucket’s night sky is. The data collected to date establishes a baseline for assessing the effectiveness of efforts to mitigate light pollution going forward — and helps us understand how close we are to losing the ability to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
Nantucket Lights and the MMA will be explaining how this project works and plans going forward. John Barentine, retained to independently analyze the data collected so far, will discuss his findings and recommendations.
Free with registration.
HONORING MLK JR DAY
At the MMA, we honor Miss Mitchell’s history of nonviolent activism, as well as her contributions to the civil rights movement.
* Maria Mitchell was twelve when she observed her first solar eclipse through a brass telescope in home on the island of Nantucket. By fifteen, she had mastered higher mathematics, supplemented with an ardent love of poetry. No institution had anything further to offer her in the way of higher education for a woman. And so, at seventeen, she founded a small school of her own.
The first children who approached the teenage teacher for enrollment were immigrants of color. Having just witnessed a vehement outcry when the Nantucket’s public school had attempted integration the previous year, Mitchell knew that admitting students of color would cost her the support of many parents, particularly the wealthy. Mitchell made a decision with a clarity of conviction that would come to mark her life. The three children became her first scholars, soon joined by others ranging in age from six to fourteen.
Before she could savor the success of her school, at eighteen she was offered the head librarianship of the Nantucket Atheneum She was eighteen. During her tenure at the Atheneum, Mitchell hosted the institution’s regular public lectures by itinerant speakers. Among them was a young man who had escaped slavery three years earlier. In 1841, a nervous twenty-three-year-old Frederick Douglass — the same age as Mitchell — took the podium at the Atheneum to deliver his very first public address before the mixed-race audience of five hundred for the first Nantucket Anti-Slavery Convention. “It was with the utmost difficulty,” Douglass would later recount, “that I could stand erect, or that I could command and articulate two words without hesitation and stammering. I trembled in every limb.”
He is pictured here that same year.

HARBOR MONITORING PROJECT | WORKS IN PROGRESS
2/2
Our Nantucket Harbor Monitoring Project is a collaboration led by the Maria Mitchell Association, in partnership with Remain Nantucket Fund at the Community Foundation for Nantucket, Great Harbor Yacht Club Foundation, Osceola Foundation, Sociable Weaver Foundation, and the Town of Nantucket’s Harbormaster.
The MMA deployed a YSI EMM700 oceanographic buoy into Nantucket Harbor in August, to begin a continuous data collection project, the first of its kind on Nantucket Island.
Our preliminary data is in! Continued from previous post:
1. The current location confirms our prediction that tidal cycles have a substantial impact on water quality due to an infusion of Nantucket Sound water into the harbor with each high tide.
2. Regular fluctuations of measured parameters correlated to cyclic (tidal) water movements past the buoy, confirm a significant change in water quality over the duration that the water remains in the harbor (in other words, water quality changes while in the harbor).
3. The influx of Nantucket Sound water quality may provide a useful baseline upon which to gauge future water quality and mitigation efforts.
4. Visual transect suggests that macroalgae cover in eelgrass beds fluctuates (increases) locally through the summer months.
5. Significant rainfall events have a measurable impact on nutrient, pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity of harbor water while minor rainfall events did not.
6. Harbor water quality at the Brant Point confluence returns to previous conditions rapidly after rainfall events. This is consistent with predictions.
7. Given the insights gained from the buoy in its present location, we may want to consider an alternative location for subsequent deployments.

70th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
The countdown is on, for the 70th Annual Nantucket Christmas Bird Count! On December 29, 2024, this incredible event hosted by the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and UMass Nantucket Field Station, part of the oldest and longest-running community science project—wouldn’t be possible without our amazing community of volunteers.
Maria Mitchell Association is thrilled to be among the volunteers collecting data — and you can too! This community event brings us together to celebrate Nantucket’s birdlife while contributing invaluable data to help understand bird populations locally and globally. It truly takes a team effort to head out across the island and count every bird we can find. Whether you’re an experienced birder or a beginner, everyone plays a role in making this special day a success.
The last day to sign up is December 20th! For more details and to sign up, head to the link in @loringnatureack’s bio.
We can’t wait to get out there, spot some exciting birds, and celebrate 70 years of conservation and community science on Nantucket. Let’s make this milestone year one to remember! Says MMA Ornithologist Ginger Andrews, “…It’s not like I remember the first one, but, it’s so amazing to see how it has grown over the years, how many people have gotten involved, how many people love birds, appreciate birds, wanna help birds, and are willing to come and count them! This is the longest citizen science project that we have, going strong for 70 years. It’s so important to collect actual data... This was started by my mother, father and John Dennis. It grew from the original three to surpassing 60 participants in our most active years. We even had one couple count on a bicycle-built-for-two haha.”

YEAR END APPEAL
It’s our privilege to ask you to support our Year End Appeal. All donations support the MMA’s mission to create opportunities for all to develop a life-long passion for science through education, research, and first-hand exploration of the sky, land, and sea of Nantucket Island.
Honoring Andrew Carnegie for his incredible support of our Astronomy Education + Research Program.
YEAR END REVIEW | YEAR AHEAD PLANNING
The Maria Mitchell Association has been shaping lives since 1902, and was founded to preserve the legacy of native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator, Maria Mitchell. Maria Mitchell’s “learning by doing” philosophy drives us to reach beyond the shores of Nantucket and to make a lasting impact on generations of learners both here and afar.
Your gift translates directly into our resources to support: children attending our camps, families exploring our exhibits, stargazers at the Loines Observatory, explorers taking our guided walks, students using our research center, and the hundreds of interns we’ve mentored, in this distinctly captivating environment of Nantucket Island.
As all our visitors and regulars take their passion beyond our shores, they create a Ripple Effect that starts on Nantucket, fostering a greater commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Our tradition of education and curiosity lives on in everything we do.
Please visit link in bio for ways to support the continued, meaningful and impactful operation of our nonprofit organization on Nantucket Island. Photos by MMA camp alumni Henry Michaelis of one of our Aquarium regulars!
